On Saturday, June 20, 2026, we held our International Day to bring our community together for Refugee Week. This year’s theme was “Courage.” With over 80 attendees, it was a wonderful day of celebration, unity, and cultural sharing. Michelline Safi-Ngongo, the Chair and Founder of LPPI, then gave a warm welcome and thank you.
We began with a lovely performance of “Lovely Day” Bill Withers. played on the saxophone by our Saturday Homework Club volunteer Netty. Our young choir and Homework Club learners then entertained everyone by performing “Running (Refugee Song)” featuring Gregory porter and “Happy.” By Pharell Williams Our Community Perpetual Choir, followed with three beautiful songs.

After the singing and dancing, we heard an informative presentation from Ahmed Matouk, one of our Food Bank volunteers and Arabic interpreters about his experience in the UK since moving from Algeria.
Our Trustee, Njok Malik Jeng [BEM], talked about his community cultural organisation, Yaram Arts, why he started it, and the importance of community. He explained how, despite the challenges our communities face, supporting each other and celebrating our differences helps us create stronger, more welcoming communities.

Guests enjoyed a tasty selection of dishes from various countries, celebrating the rich cultures within our community. After lunch, we held a certificate presentation to recognize the hard work and commitment of our young Homework Club members throughout the term.
Our French intern, Isaac, also shared two short films he made. A community film featuring our volunteers discussing what International Day and the LPPI community mean to them. They also shared their favourite proverbs from their cultures, showing the wisdom and traditions that connect us all. We ended the day with more dancing and singing to music from around the world played by DJ Keren , including Albanian music and dancing being a particular hit.
We want to thank everyone who attended and helped make the day a success. Celebrating International Day during Refugee Week is very important to us, as it honours the diverse backgrounds of our staff, volunteers, and community members. Together, we continue to build a welcoming and inclusive community where everyone belongs.
